Integrative Health

Integrative health focuses on the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. Birchwood Senior Living is pleased to offer the integrative therapies below. These are non-pharmacological measures that can be used in your journey towards health and healing.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are extracts of plants used to restore balance to the body and emotions through the sense of smell. Essential oils can shift our physiology and have been shown to reduce anxiety, pain, and nausea symptoms; they can also impact mood, memory, and learning. We’ve found that essential oils are an extremely beneficial component of our integrative services, and easy to use.

Hand and Foot Massage

The gentle use of touch to massage the hands and feet is a therapeutic way to soothe the muscles and help the whole body to relax. Essential oils are often used with the massage. People may feel surprised at how relaxed they feel after a hand or foot massage.

Healing Music

Music can help to lower stress, reduce pain, and improve sleep. It can also facilitate movement and provide an outlet for expression of feelings. The C.A.R.E. channel has nature imagery and calming music, shifting the environment to be a calming space. Music CDs are available on the units, and there are often music performances on campus.

Guided Imagery

Guided imagery is the practice of using your imagination to direct your thoughts towards healing. This therapy is clinically effective in reducing pain, anxiety, and promoting sleep. Audio CDs or spoken imagery can take you on a journey towards better health and wellbeing.

Energy-Based Healing Modalities

Healing Touch or Reiki is given by trained practitioners with light touch in a heart-centered and intentional way. These sessions can facilitate a deep sense of calm, promote rest, and allow the body to be in the best condition for healing.

Our integrative services are led by nurses, and also provided by Community Life staff. If you’d like more information please contact Jennifer Husnik, Director of Nursing, at 651-466-1040.
